So in todays society we still value a college education way too high for jobs that doesn’t really require it. These days knowledge is widely available for free on the internet.
Information is now a commodity.
That means that anyone can get the required knowledge for a job.
Side note: Obviously I’m not talking about all kinds of jobs because that would be crazy. For example if you want to become a doctor there are a lot of insanely expensive tools that are needed. So as long as you are not planning on building a micro hospital in your backyard then maybe its best to go to medical school. This is the same case for many other professions as well. So in other words there is still a place for formal education in many careers. Mostly I’m talking about Business, Marketing, IT & Computer Science, History, Psychology, Art & Design etc..
But I think you can easily decide for yourself whether a job is suitable for 100% self education or not.
So Why is being self taught more valuable compared to formal education such as college?
– It shows self interest and passion for the subject. Let’s face it, school is structured and easy and you get punished if you fail. In school you are truly invested. Maybe with a fat loan, maybe through friends and family or whatever else. Its harder to quit so you are more likely to follow through to get that degree even if you don’t really enjoy the subject you are learning.
Self education on the other hand, its incredibly easy to quit. So the fact that someone endured all the ups and downs and does whatever they are doing on their free time is remarkable. This is the type of person a recruiter should be looking for, a person that proves that they are truly interested in their craft for real, and not on paper.
– Self taught people can adapt better to the future. Since they enjoy what they are doing enough to do it in their free time they are more likely stay up to date with recent trends and new practices in their craft.
Adaptation has always been important as automation changes the job market. And now so more than ever.
It’s also more likely the self taught person is already more up to date since they probably have been learning on the internet with relatively new information.
Formal education teaches outdated information, in many areas (especially technology) formal education simply can’t keep up with the pace of advancement so the students are being taught old and maybe even irrelevant information.
So why would you attend University?
So considering you are learning outdated information, it would be a good idea to focus on other parts of college. Such as attending events to meet new interesting people and make new connections. University is a great opportunity for this since it makes it a lot easier to meet unknown people because there are usually events all over the place. And people are also generally more open-minded to meet new people.
Don’t spend all the time maximizing your grades! Use the extra time you get from not doing that on building a side business alone or together with a team, or find an interesting side job!
These things are way more useful and will not only give you REAL experience but it will put you above your competition because you are going to stick out!
So in other words, university is not all that bad if you use the opportunity properly! Because you should teach yourself the information for free on the internet anyways.
That is the end of this blog post and hopefully I was able to wake up some new thoughts! As always you can follow my daily struggles on twitter @Emil Malmsten Take Care!
